You'll take a diagnostic test at the beginning of your course, this will provide you with an individual study plan based on your skills. USMLE Live + Center Overview

USMLE Live Prep - 7 weeks + USMLE Center Prep - 3 months

Study in the US with Kaplan and combine Live lectures with our Center based preparation for the most comprehensive course option. Studying Live + Center Prep entitles you to apply for a Student Visa, and Kaplan can provide you with an I-20 necessary for gaining the visa. To get an I-20 you'll need to complete a Medical Admissions Application Form and send us the following details:

  • Proof of English Language competency
  • Copies of Bank Statements proving you can survive financially in the US
  • Proof and details of your Medical Diploma/Degree or Qualifications
  • Signed letter of Sponsorship if you are being supported by a family member/institution
  • Proof of Nationality and copies of your passport

Once we have the relevant information we can send your details to our team in the US who will provide you with your I-20.

When you start your course, you'll be assigned to a Kaplan Medical Center of your choice, from here you'll be able to access filmed lectures on a media server, and your Personal Learning System (PLS). During your 3 month enrollment period you'll take your 7 week live preparation course, you'll have a week of live lectures for each subject area with a US Medical Expert.

USMLE Step 1 Test Overview

To work or train as a Doctor in the US, as an International Medical Graduate, you must have ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) Certification. The ECFMG is the body that certifies your qualifications, telling US Program Coordinators that you have the qualifications and experience necessary to work in the US.

To gain ECFMG Certification you must take the USMLE Step 1, 2CK and 2CS exams. Your USMLE Step 1 score is also used as a primary screening system for Residency Training application. You need to compete with US Graduates who typically score higher on the USMLE Step 1 exam.

The USMLE Step 1 exam is typically taken by US Medical Graduates after their second year at Medical School. It tests the Basic Sciences; Anatomy, Behavioral Science, Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Pathology.

USMLE Step 1 Test Scores

When you take your USMLE Step 1, you will receive two scores; a three digit score (188) and a two digit score (75). The passing score will always be 75, this is a percentile. The three digit score will change depending on the question difficulty and the passing standard of the year.

USMLE Step 1 Passing Score: 188 (75)

This is a minimum passing score and is not adequate to gain a Residency Training Program. Program coordinators use the USMLE Step 1 score as an initial screening tool. A high score will get your application seen and gain you an invitation for interview. The US Medical Student average for the USMLE Step 1 is 220-240, you will be competing with these students for Residency Training Programs.

Register for the USMLE Step 1

To register for your USMLE Step 1 exam, you must first register with the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). This is the body the certifies your qualifications. You must have ECFMG Certification to enter Residency or Fellowship and to gain State Licensure.

Register for an ECFMG "Token" at www.ecfmg.org. This is an ID number used for your account. You'll need to send a form 186 (identification form) signed by a Dean and Notary service and check your Medical School appears in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).

To book your USMLE Step 1 exam, you'll need to pick a three month Eligibility Period, in which you plan to take your USMLE Step 1 exam. Once you've selected this time, you will be sent a Scheduling Permit, with instructions for booking your USMLE Step 1 exam. You'll book with the Prometric Center. You will have to take your USMLE Step 1 in the three month period you've stipulated, or you'll loose your application fee. Eligibility extensions are available if you feel you are not ready to take your exam in the three months you've picked.

You can take your USMLE Step 1 outside of the US. If you are booking to take your exam in one of the international testing locations you'll be charged an International Test Delivery Charge.
